Teaching the Re-Imagining Migration Framework

As educators, creating an inclusive learning community is paramount to ensure that all students have the knowledge, skills, and understanding to navigate a world of migration and demographic change. To help achieve this goal, we have curated a list of helpful resources that you can use to reflect on your own practice and learn new ideas and strategies to deepen relationships with your students and create a culturally responsive curriculum for our changing communities. Several of these resources draw from the Re-Imagining Migration framework that developed by Veronica Boix-Mansilla of Project Zero in collaboration with Re-Imagining Migration staff,

Below are the resources we have selected:

1. 8-Step Educator Reflection Toolkit:

This resource provides a step-by-step guide to help educators reflect on their biases and assumptions and develop strategies for creating a more inclusive learning environment. 

2. Re-Imagining Migration Framework:

The framework provides a comprehensive approach to teaching migration that emphasizes the importance of understanding the experiences and perspectives of migrants themselves

3. The Re-Imagining Migration Learning Arc:

This resource provides a framework for teaching about migration in ways that help students recognize how migration has shaped our families, communities, and world. 

4. Five Dispositions for a World on the Move:

This resource outlines core dispositions for navigating a world of migration and change. 

5. Project Zero Thinking Routines for Re-Imagining Migration:

This collection of Thinking Routines for a World on the Move are concrete and accessible pedagogical tools that you can use to nurture the dispositions identified above across ages, contexts (classrooms, museums, community organizations), curricular areas, and academic disciplines.

6. SEL Thinking Routines for Teaching in a World on the Move:

These Project Zero Thinking Routines are a set of usable strategies for integrating social-emotional learning into the classroom, helping students develop the skills they need to navigate a world on the move. 

7. The Re-Imagining Migration Guide to Creating Curriculum:

This guide provides a step-by-step approach to developing a curriculum about migration that integrates the learning arc, dispositions for a world on the move, and Thinking Routines in culturally responsive ways, building understanding and belonging.

8. Culturally Responsive Teaching Checklist:

This checklist is a tool for evaluating your teaching practice. It includes a framework that identifies different stages of culturally responsive approaches.

9. Building Diverse, Culturally Responsive Text Sets with the Learning Arc:

This resource provides a framework for selecting and using texts to promote students’ understanding of migration, helping students develop the knowledge, skills, understanding, and dispositions they need to navigate a world on the move.
