This comprehensive ELA Resource Toolkit equips educators with everything needed to center themes of migration, belonging, identity, and community in their literature curriculum. Designed for both curriculum planning and daily instruction, the toolkit bridges academic rigor with socio-emotional learning while connecting texts to students’ lived experiences.

What This Toolkit Offers

Three Integrated Components

While designed to work together seamlessly, each component can also stand alone:

1. Literature Mapping (Parts 1 & 2) – Teacher-facing curriculum planning tools that help educators map their entire year or unit, analyzing how texts work together to build themes, provide windows and mirrors for all students, and contribute to classroom belonging
2. Literary Analysis Guide – A comprehensive student-facing graphic organizer that guides deep textual engagement from pre-reading through final projects, supporting daily instruction with structured analysis of migration themes
3. Close Reading Analysis Handout – A supplemental passage-specific tool that scaffolds close reading practice and builds toward final writing projects

How to Use This Toolkit

Recommended Implementation Path:

1. Complete Literature Mapping Part 1 to consider your unit/year as a whole
2. Complete Literature Mapping Part 2 for each individual work before teaching
3. Complete the Literary Analysis Guide for each text (teacher version)
4. Customize and edit the guide for student use
5. Create Close Reading Analysis Handouts for specific passages
6. Adapt handouts for student assignments

Built-In Flexibility:

The toolkit is designed for complete customization. Text marked in orange requires special adaptation. Educators can create multiple versions for different scaffolding needs, adjusting spacing for handwritten or digital work, pre-filling sections, providing translations, or including only the most essential components for specific student populations.

Practical Format:

The Literary Analysis Guide is designed to be three-hole punched and kept in a binder students bring to class daily, creating a comprehensive study resource that builds throughout the reading. Close Reading handouts are added to the same binder, allowing students to easily reference passages when completing final writing projects.

Supporting Resources

Before beginning, gather relevant standards, assessments, student demographic data, and classroom community observations. The toolkit connects to additional Re-Imagining Migration tools including the Learning Environment Observation Form, Student Belonging Survey, Dispositions frameworks, and Community Guidelines Builder.
