BELONG: A Practice Organizer for Building Belonging
Schools are where young people learn not just content, but whether they matter. The BELONG Practice Organizer helps educators translate their commitment to inclusion into concrete, everyday practice.
What It Is
BELONG is a collaborative planning tool built around six research-informed practices that foster student belonging:
Build Inclusive Norms — Establish shared expectations that everyone belongs and is responsible for one another’s dignity
Engineer Meaningful Collaboration — Design group work so students genuinely depend on one another as equals
Lift Student Identities Safely — Value students’ backgrounds without spotlighting, stereotyping, or tokenizing
Open Dialogue with Structure — Create space for perspective-taking through carefully scaffolded conversation
Notice and Interrupt Bias — Address exclusion consistently and calmly in ways that reinforce belonging
Grow Belonging Over Time — Support students through transitions, normalizing struggle while reinforcing hope
How to Use It
The organizer works for individual reflection or team collaboration. Each section includes plain-language descriptions, guided questions, and space to document both current practices and next steps. No facilitator required.
Use it to plan a lesson, audit a unit, or build shared commitments across your grade-level team or department. The optional team reflection at the end helps groups identify priorities and commit to small, actionable changes.
