360 Belonging Surveys for Schools

Grade Levels: Elementary, High School, Middle School Types: Planning Tools Questions: How can we create powerful learning environments for our students?

These belonging surveys are designed to assess the sense of belonging and inclusion experienced by all members of the school community. The 360-degree approach captures perspectives from students, families, and educators to provide a holistic understanding of the school’s climate and culture.

They are intentionally designed to be adapted for use in ways that reflect the needs, language, and culture of each educational institution. As of this writing, we only have versions of the surveys in English. We recognize the need for translation and will share translated versions as soon as we are able.

If you are interested in piloting these surveys, please reach out to us through the contact us form on the Re-Imagining Migration website.

Source Attribution: These surveys are adapted from the Belonging Barometer developed by Over Zero and created by Michelle Bellino (University of Michigan), Susan Rivers (History CO:Lab), and Adam Strom (Re-Imagining Migration).

The surveys focus on key dimensions of belonging, including:

  • Cultural identity affirmation and celebration
  • Peer relationships across differences
  • Family engagement and communication
  • Teacher-student connections
  • Curriculum representation
  • Safety in discussions of diversity
  • Recognition of multilingual and multicultural assets
