Poet and Author Marjorie Agosin is an immigrant to the United States from Chile. While she was born in the United States and moved back to Chile when she was three months old. Her family relocated to the United States in the months before Pinochet’s overthrow of President Salvador Allende.
In the PRI reflection below, Marjorie reflects on her first days in the United States.
What words does Marjorie use to describe what her first days in the U.S. felt like? How does she explain those feelings?
Marjorie explains that her two siblings adjusted better than she did. What helped her through those difficult times? What resources can you draw on during difficult times?
Marjorie explains that her mother encouraged her to “take the best of both worlds.” What advice might you give someone who is struggling to adjust to a new community, new school, or new country?
