Educators Guide for Serving Immigrant Youth and English Learners

Scholar Carola Suárez-Orozco reminds us that immigrant-origin students are more than language learners. Indeed, creating culturally responsive learning environments for immigrant-origin youth compels us not to view them through a deficit lens. Instead, educators must recognize the assets they bring into our schools while also understanding the particular challenges they face in schools and society. Recognizing that educators have to understand the students they serve, this guide includes insights, research, and evidence-based practices from scholars of education, youth development, and language education.

This guide was developed by Carola Suárez-Orozco with Adam Strom and Rosalinda Larios.
