Explore Your Community’s Migration Stories

This comprehensive 2.5-day lesson transforms students into “story explorers” who uncover both visible and invisible migration narratives in their local community. Designed for grades 5-8, this hands-on curriculum combines structured observation, critical thinking, and community exploration.

What Students Will Do:

  • Day 1: Complete a K-W-L organizer and prepare for community investigation
  • Day 2: Conduct guided exploration of neighborhood spaces, documenting evidence of migration stories using structured mapping activities
  • Day 3: Create a migration stories walking tour that synthesizes their discoveries

Key Learning Outcomes:

Students develop skills in primary source analysis, structured observation, and historical thinking while building empathy for diverse migration experiences. They learn to distinguish between prominently featured stories and those that remain hidden, fostering critical awareness of whose narratives get told and why.

Flexible Implementation:

The lesson works in any setting – from neighborhood walks to school building exploration to virtual tours using historical photos. All materials include detailed teacher guidance for site selection, safety considerations, and differentiation strategies.

This curriculum aligns with multiple standards, including NCSS Thematic Standards, Common Core, C3 Framework, and CASEL Social-Emotional Learning guidelines, making it easily adaptable for social studies, language arts, or interdisciplinary units focused on community, identity, and historical thinking.
