The I’m-Migration app is a free storytelling application that encourages conversations by recording and preserving the experiences of migrants – past and present

 The Need:

From our very origins, the human journey has been shaped by migration. For over 70,000 years human beings have been on the move and today—with 250 million international migrants and 750 internal migrants—migrations are reshaping the world. While foundational to the human experience, across space and time, when large numbers of newcomers arrive, bringing new languages and customs, they are often met with skepticism and distrust that contributes to prejudice that leaves young people disempowered, and threatens communities. We need to disrupt the dialogue. We need to hear each other’s stories.

A Tool for Individuals, Institutions, Families, Classrooms, and the Community

The easy to use app guides users through the interviewing experience. To use the app, simply download the app for your phone, and follow the prompts.

We are seeking dissemination partners to bring the app to communities across the world and financial support to share the stories of I’m-Migration with the public.

An Opportunity to Speak and Listen

As humans, all of us have stories of migration, whether in this generation or in the distant past. While this is our common experience, we rarely share these stories with each other.

Immigrant children at Ellis Island. Up to 40 percent of people in the US can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island.

The app is designed so that each story is recorded as part of an interview — with recommended questions to record individual stories about:

  • Motivations for migrating
  • The journey itself
  • Hopes and realities of life in the new land
  • Advice for migrants and receiving communities today

Promoting Empowerment, Understanding, and Empathy

At a time when so much of what we think we know about the world is re-enforced by isolation, segregation, and the filter bubbles of social media, the I’m-Migration app encourages communication across communities, histories, and time.

  • What would newcomers learn from listening to the stories of migrants from the past?
  • What would people whose families migrated generations ago, learn by hearing the stories of immigrants today?
  • What similarities would they find?
  • What differences would they notice?

Juxtaposing stories of migration — past and present — allows interviewers and the public to make connections and places today’s stories within broader experiences across time and space. By encouraging people to share family stories, the I’m-Migration App encourages conversations that transcend heated political rhetoric while speaking and listening to one another promotes empowerment, understanding, and empathy.
