What: Re-Imagining Migration aims to make the moving stories that connect us across our identities and experiences visible. We have developed an easy-to-use interview protocol to use to spark these conversations in the form of interviews. Our goal is to engage a range of public figures, educators, and youth in sharing their stories across social media and in classrooms around the country.

Why: We live in contentious times. Listening and connecting across differences – whether ideological, social, or racial—has become seemingly more challenging than ever. And yet, the stakes of not connecting and engaging in acts of understanding have profound and divisive implications for social-emotional development, human relationships, and the future of our democracy.

What do we mean by Moving Stories?: At Re-Imagining Migration, we believe that migration is an experience that almost everyone in the United States shares somewhere in their family history. Whether it is recent or generations ago, within or across borders, across town or across the world, by choice or through force, for a better life or for refuge: everyone has a migration story. Reflecting upon our Moving Stories, listening to one another explore, relating to those experiences, and learning from those narratives is a powerful way to find common ground.

Who are we? Re-Imagining Migration is a non-profit educational organization driven by a belief that every student has the right to an equitable and inclusive K-12 education where all students, regardless of their migration histories and experiences, feel a sense of belonging.

Our mission is to advance the education and well-being of immigrant-origin youth, decrease bias and hatred against young people of diverse origins, and help rising generations develop the critical understanding and empathy necessary to build and sustain welcoming and inclusive communities. We believe that every student has the right to an inclusive education where all young people, regardless of their migration histories and experiences, feel a sense of belonging.

We achieve this by championing the educational rights of immigrant-origin youth, ensuring that educators have access to research-based training and resources that support immigrant-origin youth; disseminating educational practices that promote unifying narratives of migration, decrease prejudice and xenophobia; and building bridges between newcomers and their communities.
